I have a curious thing that happens from time to time with my start menu,
and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Every so often, when I click on
the Start button, the menu pops up, but is doubled. What I mean is, it's
like it's there twice, one in the normal position, and an exact copy above
it on the screen. Both appear equally "solid", and the shortcuts on both
seem to work the same. I have checked the actual menus in Windows Explorer,
and everything there is OK. If I reboot, or set the menu to "Classic" and
then back to the XP style, it all comes right again. I've used XP for
several years, and never seen anything like this. Everything works OK, the
machine is a responsive and reliable as ever, and nothing I can see is doing
this. The desktop is the standard XP theme, with just a plain blue
background. This is a working machine, so I don't use it for testing,
experimenting, or generally do anything that could compromise its
reliability.

Just one thing - I have a mania as the only user, for placing my entire menu
in my user folder. There are no menu items in the All users folder. Can't
see how that could do this, and I've organised my menus like that for years
without difficulty. It's not a security or performance issue, but if anyone
can offer any ideas I would be most interested.

I haven't seen this sort of thing either. Next time it happens you should
right-click each shortcut belonging to a pair, then click "Properties", then
click the "General" tab. Do you get two identical frames? Note: You don't
need to close one frame before moving on to the next - you can have both
frames open at the same time.

Good thought. I'll try that next time it happens and report back - thanks.

Have you checked for a possible update for your video card?

Yes, my driver is the latest from the manufacturer's web site. Thanks for
the suggestion.
