Full Backup Fails

I am trying to do my first backup using Vista Home Premium.

The backup fails with

The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be
completed for the following reason:

Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported (0x8004230C)

I was doing a full system backup to an HP portable media drive (500gb). My
computer has 3 partitions set by the OEM

I don't think home premium supports it.

Probably the recovery drive is causing your failure. Most of the OEMs have
various utilities that "lock" that away from casual access. So exclude it
from your backup.

Thanks for the suggestion but still no luck. Additional information

A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason:

The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation
(0X81000101)

As for the comments suggesting the backup utility is not supported can you
direct me somewhere that confirms this. Every piece of documentation I have
(specific to Home Premium) provides instructions on running the backup as I
have been doing)

Not sure this will be helpful, but: I have Vista Home Premium and it does
not come with full system backup; I believe you have to have Ultimate or
Business to have that feature. My automatic backup of files and folders
works just fine.

Tried again but same results. Just to be clear on what I am doing.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium (HP OEM)
I run Backup and Restore Center from Control Panel
Select Back up files - This displays C,D,E drives. (C Defaults) I remove D
and E from the backup and run the backup. Note: the utility does not provide
for any greater granularity than the drive level.
Vista asks which file types to backup - I leave the defaults (ALL)
Vista asks how often to create a backup - I select daily, then Save settings
and start backup
Backup Files Dialog Box displays "Creating Shadow Copy"
After about an hour the backup fails with the messages provided previously.

Is there an I HATE VISTA WEB-SITE? After years of trouble free computing
with 2000 and XP the last 4 months have been nothing but trouble with this
operating system! (Sorry for the rant)
