Backup Transient error message.

I am unable to backup (files or computer) on a New Gateway desktop with Vista
Ultimate. Came with dual partitioned hard drive. 2nd partition contains
standard recovery data (Windows File copies). Vista backup program
configured to also backup to this partition. Added second hard drive for
backups and it works fine. Reconfigured Backup program to backup this drive.
Completed first backup successfully. Subsequent attempts to this drive or a
DVD result in the following message. “The Backup did not complete
successfully. A Shadow copy could not be created for the following reason:
The writer experienced a transient Error. If the backup process is retied,
the error may not reoccur. 0X800423F3â€

This is the first I've seen of this error. Will you contact me via email?
(Remove "online" from my address.) I'd like you to generate a log file for
me and send me some screenshots of your hardware setup.

Thanks!

Did you get an answer to this questions? I've received the same error message and cannot complete a subsequent back-up from the first one I created. The first back was successful but any subsequent backups fail for this same reason 'can't create a shadow copy'.

What question? What error message?
Don't eggheaders know how to post to a newsgroup?

No, we don't have a resolution yet. We know it's a VSS error, but we don't
know the cause. I've advised the customer to contact product support, which
I wish I didn't have to do. I'll let them know that we've had another report
of this though.

What kind of computer do you have--is it brand new? Are you getting the
exact same error code as the other customer?

Hi Tom

Apparently the ".NET Developer Portal of Choice" doesn't have any developers
who know how to port a website forum to the newsgroups properly.

For those following this string, the problem is solved. In Services, the
Volume Shadow Copy Service was set to “Manual†start, and had not been
started. This was changed to “Automaticâ€, then clicked on “Startâ€. Problem
no longer exits.

Not so fast, Captain Al,

I too, am receiving "the writer experienced a transient error" message
(0X800423F3) and cannot backup my 'puter. Your fix does nothing to eliminate
the problem.

I'm running Visa Premium on a brand new Gateway. Gateway support has been
very helpful with suggestions like "check to make sure the computer is
plugged in."

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Unplug the computer and then plug it in again. Place the Ubuntu LiveCD in
the drive. Restart your computer. When the desktop appears, click the
Install icon. Make sure to have Ubuntu use your whole hard drive. That way
Vista and all your problems will be gone forever.

very funny, and believe me, I'm almost there..... Vista has all this eye
candy to make it look like Mac OS X, but if you want it to actually work you
have to disable most of the effects. And I have 3G of RAM. ...was over at
a friend's house, checked the RAM on his Mac.. 526 Mb and it flies.

Too late to buy a mac.. maybe I'll just go check out ubuntu .....

Today I installed Beryl on my laptop (1.4GHz) with 512MB RAM, onboard shared
video card. Now I have a 3d desktop and it doesn't slowdown at all and
looks and works much nicer than Vista. Cost? Nothing.

From the Gateway customers I've worked with, their only solution has been to
do a clean install. We've had reports of other errors like this on Gateways
caused by imaging problems, so this problem might also be an imaging issue.
Have Gateway walk you through a clean install. I wish I had a simpler
solution for you.
