FTP sites using browser very slow

Is there some reason that Internet Explorer will slow common FTP sites to a crawl. I
called myself searching the Knowledge Base, and doing more than a few searches on
Google and don't seem to find a reason. Sites like Microsoft, and other common sites
take up to 10 minutes to load, and each level in the tree take the same long time to
build.

Does anyone have an answer?

First, eliminate parasites.

Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
