FTP protocol

Hello,

I am using FP03, I receive this error message when I try to open a file in
an FTP site that has already been opened with username and password.
"Frontpage does not support opening files from FTP servers".

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bob Glover

Very simple, exactly what the error message indicates, Frontpage does not support opening files from
FTP servers.

The live/remote site must be hosted on a server that has the FP extensions and you must open the
site in FP via http://www.domainname.com, not via FTP.

You can't open a file on ftp you can open a folder.

If your web server supports FP extensions and they are installed and working
on your web/site you can open your web/site "live" with FrontPage via http:
Open FP | Open Web/Site | enter http://yourwebname.com

Thank you for the quick response, are u telling me that FP cannot open files
through ftp? I spoke with the HSP and he had no problem opening the files and
they do not accept FP server extensions.

Why would FP allow u to set up a ftp site?

Thanks for your reply, this make more sence than the previous reply, however
yes I could see the folders and the files, when i tried to open the file no
go. When i open my sites through HTTP i normally open the site @ the folder
level then go back and open a file with no issues.

Y won't it let me do that with ftp?

When working with FTP sites and FrontPage it is normal practise to
build and edit the website on your PC, then Publish (using FTP) to the
server. Any changes made to the site are made in your copy (on the
PC) then the site is Published as before. There is rarely any need to
touch any files on the server, except to overwrite them when
publishing.
In the event you do need to edit the web site, download the file to
your PC, edit and publish.

Also if you are using any of the FP server extension features, FTP may well trash them,
requiring a repair or reinstall o0f the extensions.
Safer to publish using HTTP.

The error message is correct, and FP doesn't set up a FTP site, it will however let you upload
content to one in most cases, but not all.

I'm not that much of a technogeekazoid on this but I'll render a guess...ftp
is file transfer protocol and that is kinda self explanatory. FP http method
deals with the web as a whole and has files that allow you to open and edit
the individual files and keeps track of changes to related files. I could be
wrong but this is how I explain it to myself :)

Hello Ron,

I am not sure if you got my last message so I am reposting, Thank you this
is what I needed to here. I was not sure if I was (regardless of the error
message) doing something wrong or if i needed to download an update for FP.

I usually do my updates on the server side via http so this is pretty new to
me.

Thank you all for your help.

Sincerely,

Bob
