Frustrating XP Home Network

Folks,
I'm at my wits end. I'm helping my nephew setup DLink Router, Wireless
PCMCIA Card (also DLink) and a desktop PC. Both use XP Home. The status is
as follows:
We can access files on the laptop.
Both can access the internet.
The laptop can't access the desktop. (error is that the user doesn't have
permission and not enough server storage).
We log on both systems with the same user name and password, both have
admin rights.
We can ping the ip address on both (laptop to desktop and vice versa), but
not the computer name on both.
Both have folders shared.
I followed MS KB 308007 Troubleshooting Networking in Windows XP. It
mentioned pinging the computer name, but not what to do if you can't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very surprised that DLink won't
offer an assistance on this issue.

Im sorry to tell you this, and I am sure its not the best
or correct answer, but XP home is a pian in the you know
what to get on a network. The first thing I would do is
upgrade to professional edition and I garauntee this and
all the minor problems associated with it will go away

I think this might be the same problem I had and solved recently.

I have two PC on a LAN. Call them PC1 and PC2. I was trying to access a
shared folder on a USB drive attached to PC1 from PC2. I got a few access
permission errors and somethimes this one....

"Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

Here is what I found out and the solution that worked for me....

I searched for the message in the Help and Support System but got no hits.

Then Google found this thread "in another place"...

Which suggested I look at...

(I've no idea why I couldn't find it via Help and Support?)

Anyway...

I used "Event Viewer" to look in the event log on PC1 (eg the "server" in
the loose sense of the word) and found I was getting errors with Event ID
2011. The info says..

"The servers configuration paramater "ipstacksize" is too
small for the server to use a local device. Please increase
the value of this parameter. Blah Blah...."

Perhaps you get a slightly different error message?

Anyway I fired up RegEdit and the ipstacksize key in the registry (on PC1)
was set to Hex b (Dec 11) so I increased it by 3 to 14 (and later to 15) and
rebooted both PC. After that PC2 could access the resources on PC1 just fine
(eg no further changes to access permissions were required).

I've read that the default for this parameter is 15 (decimal) and that there
are suggestions on the web that the problem is connected to Norton Anti
Virus S/W somehow but I have no evidence for that (other than that also
happens to be what I'm using)..

On the WinXP PCs, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall
is disabled on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,

That's not true, at all. Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes

and that should fix the... "not enough server storage" error as well?
