Frustrating automatic deletion of emails

When an email in my inbox gets read, (or marked as read after the pre-set
time window), it automatically gets deleted when I leave my inbox, and no
copy of it is left in my deleted items folder. So I only get one shot at
reading it! I cannot figure out how to change this, can anyone help?
