If i am reading an email and decide to delete it, it automatically opens the
next email. I want to be able to delete the email and have it automatically
put me back in my inbox without opening the next email. does anyone know how
to fix this?

View>Layout>disable Preview Pane>apply/OK
Put the Preview Button on the top Toolbar, switch back and forth as is your
want?
View>Layout>Customise Toolbar.
HTH?

You did not do it correctly then?
With preview disabled you only see a list of messages and you have to double
click to open any message.

Right, but after he opens the message that way, he wants to be able to delete it
without the next message automatically opening.

To the OP: The only way is to delete messages from the message list pane
only, not from any other screen.

If you are double clicking messages to open them in their own window you
will have to close that window before deleting.

Thanks Frank and Gary. That answers my question. When i had Outlook, i could
set it up to automatically take me to the inbox when i delete a message i was
reading. i was hoping i could do the same with windows mail, but i now know i
can't. thanks for all your help!

Why would anyone read a message that needed to be deleted immediately?

View the message list, with Preview disabled, delete the obvious junk, that
was not detected and moved to the Junk folder, at times I can't get my
breath.

You're welcome. As you've found out, Windows Mail is not as
full-featured as Outlook, which is understandable for a free program.
