Frustrated with Win XP...on the verge of buying a Mac

I am running win xp pro on a Dell 8250 with 256MB of RAM. I use zone alarm
pro and kaspersky anti virus software with my cable modem connection.

For the past several months, booting up the machine has been extremely
frustrating. The boot process will get to the desktop and then just freeze.
I will have to reset and then turn the machine on again to reboot. While
this was merely annoying when it happened once, now I will have to go
through this routing six or seven times to get the machine to boot up! All
updates are current (except for sp1, which, on a previous installation
caused many problems).

I thought it might be that the drive was too fragmented, so I have tried to
defrag the c: drive. Unfortunately this is impossible since the process
gets to about 1% and then freezes up the machine.

Any help would be appreciated.

If the machine is still under warranty, contact Dell. Sounds like a
physical part is having to heat up to settle down. Might be a problem with
the hard drive. Good Luck.
