I replaced the hard drive and installed xp. After the install the video
display did not appear normal. A pop up block asked if i wanted windows to
change the display. I clicked ok the unit rebooted. The windows xp logo
shows up but then the display goes black. This happens even in safe mode.

If you were not that far - reinstall and this time - install the correct
video driver first.. But I am shocked you cannot boot into Safe Mode.

The very same thing happened to me yesterday (formatted drive, reinstalled
WinXP, windows adjusted resolution (I have not loaded my monitor drivers
yet), then installed SP2. Following multiple auto restarts, windowsXP did
not come up, just kept rebooting. Today I tried going into Safe Mode, PC
would keep rebooting anyway. Even going back to 'earlier known good
configuration' didn't work, just kept rebooting. Then on F8 screen, I
'disabled autorestart on errors' and this error was displayed at the end of
the boot: "Stop: C0000221 (Bad Image Checksum) The image shlwapi.dll is
possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computer
checksum".
I'm not sure if repairing the install is better or if I should just
reformat, reinstall and add video drivers before SP2 this time. The latter
is more timecoming; any ideas anyone?
TIA

Thanks for all the info. The problem was actually the video output on the
mother board.. I installed video card booted to safe mode. Problem
solved......
