(Dell dimension 2400. Xp Home).... My local computer repair shop
replaced the hard drive and power supply. They ghosted the old drive on
the new. All was working for a couple of weeks with the exception of
some display drivers missing .The utility program I downloaded from
intel to restore display drivers asked for files on the xp cd. I used
the xp install disc to run xp upgrade.. After the xp install compiled
the files necessary to start an install it checked hardware
configuration and came up with an error that said "NTDETECT failed"
then went to black screen. Now it won't boot to windows.Or restore to
the previous state. When started The Dell logo comes on then a prompt
that says to start from cd strike any key. It just goes to black screen
no matter if I press key or not. Sometimes it gives the option to boot
from hard drive or cd. Still it goes to black screen no matter what. I
installed System Suite 6 from Vcom so I can at least see the files on
my computer and delete some if necessary. There is no restore point on
my syatem. What files do I need to delete so Xp will quit trying to run
the upgrade and boot Windows? I can't boot to safe mode.
I really need to save my files and programs if possible.
Thank you in advance for your help.

It appears that xp disc may have installed the files to start the
upgrade in C: drive (Which is a small partition of about 50mb Another
story that goes back 4 years when the Pc was new). Windows is installed
on the D:drive( 80gb)

Get a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows at
http://www.ubcd4win.com/. Copy your files to another partition and
blow away the XP partition and start over.

BTW, you should see if the repair shop has a warranty on their work.
Most repair shops have a 90 day warranty on work performed. Pretty
shoddy to return the system to you with missing video drivers if you
ask me.
