Computer Won't Boot

B

Billy D.

My computer was working fine and I think a virus or malware infected my hard
drive and now computer will only show a blank black screen and will not boot
up fully, only shows single curser in the upper left hand corner. I have
tried to use a boot cd, boot disc, the install disc, and tried to do a new
install, but nothing works. The system is a Dell Optiplex GX260, with a 2.0
ghz P4 processor bought used, but has new hard drive after original one
crashed and was working fine before. Trying to install purchased retail copy
of XP Pro, but will not complete boot up. When trying to reinstall I am
prompted to reboot after using start up discs and when it does comes back to
blank black screen with single curser.
Please help!!!!

Time to bring your computer to the shop.

You are probably right, but I think we could _try_ to help Billy a
little more (i. e. tell him the first few things that "the shop" would
try).

It is in the OP's best interests to have the computer seen by a
professional as soon as possible.

Agreed.

....And when he gets it back, install a good, third party, firewall,
and shut off automatic updates.

Billy D. I agree with the others if you are not familiar & use to working on
computers, then get with your local IT buddy, shop etc... If you feel
confident with your skills, get an ERD Commander. Just about anything you
need to do, you can do through this program... Yes... Including starting
your machine up from a blank screen, unless you have a bad power supply.
