fresh install of xp without SP1slipstreamed-vid card issues

hopefully someone has an easy answer to this:
when I try a fresh o/s install with newer video card, i
cant seem to get it to stay stable enough to get the
newer drivers installed.

I've always installed in the following order:

reformat... o/s install... via 3-in-1... amd agp (my mobo
has hybrid chipset, via/agp)... sp1... critical
updates... dirx9.0... defrag... sound card drivers... vid
card drivers...

with no problems, but - back then winxp had native
drivers that recognized my older vid card on install.
Now, with newer card, i get blurs during install,
streaking mouse, and general instability.

I can do a fresh install with older card, then correctly
unistall drivers, and swap cards and update to correct
drivers - but now I'm moving over to ATI from NVIDIA so
i'd prefer (obviously) to start fresh. any additional
info needed let me know, i'll follow this closely.

ati drivers while much improved for games are horrid for just plain desktop usage.

they have several issues with refresh rates and first boot up after being installed.

to avoid problems on first boot after win xp install hit F8 and choose vga mode.
this disables the crap refresh settings the card chooses which results most times with a black screen, or in your case with blurry image.

then go into the display properties and force a good refresh rate for your monitor under the adapter tab.

basically change the setting from adapter default or optimal to a specific refresh rate that's safe for your monitor. 1024 x 768 @ 60 hz is pretty standard for a lot of monitors 17" or bigger as a safe default

some 15" and smaller would need 800 x 600 @ 60 hz

after the refresh rate is good then go ahead and install your drivers
