Any ideas why new 512 vid card only allows 1024x768?

Everything is brand new:
Intel D 3.4 Ghz cpu
3 GB DDR2 ram
microatx mobo
brand new fresh xp + sp2 install

literally the only thing NOT new here, is the monitor, which is a 15"
lcd

Then I install my XFXForce video card (512MB DDR3, Dual-DVI), install
the latest drivers for it from xfxforce.com and... the largest
resolution I can get is 1024 x 768?? Obviously this isn't right. I can
a way better resolution with the on-board video.

But I dont know what else to try. It's the latest and greatest driver.
And I can't blame any other software on the system (its a fresh xp
install).

I don't know what else to try. A friend suggested I try reinstalled
windows with the vid card already inserted this time and see what
happens, but I cant imagine that would help much. Guess we'll see.

I appreciate any idea's anyone may have.

It's because the maximum resolution the LCD monitor is capable of is
1024x768 so Windows won't let you go above that unless you go into the
Display Properties, Monitor and tick the "Enable settings this monitor
cannot support" box. Then, you'll get the ability to set a higher
resolution but the monitor won't be able to display it.

Try unticking "hide modes that this monitor can't support" in Monitor
display properties.

Yes it is right. 1024x768 is as high a resolution as 15" monitors will do.

I wouldn't do that.

The video card might support higher resolutions but you shouldn't
attempt to run the monitor at resolutions higher than it is designed
for, IMO, even though you probably cannot damage a monitor that way
in modern Windows. You should have the correct settings file
installed for your monitor. If the monitor won't support a higher
resolution, then you probably must cope or buy a new monitor.

Really?

But I dont know what else to try.

Have you tried reading the manual?
What is the highest resolution your monitor will support?

This site still has some 15" LCD monitors for sale. You can
see in the summary description that 1024x768 is a common native
resolution value for the monitors. That is as high as it goes.

I would be curious what value the built-in graphics is showing
right now.

If you want to check the monitor EDID information, use this.
EDID is the information coming from a small EEPROM inside the monitor.

In addition to what others have said about the native resolution
limits of your monitor, you can get the best possible "sub-pixel"
resolution (in Win XP) by enabling ClearType.
