frequent disconnects

I keep getting disconnected from my ISP (AT&T) when
attempting to download files such as upgrades etc.
My OS is Windows XP Pro.
Any suggestions?

It doesn't sound like a browser problem.

Are you using a modem set for software flow-control(XON/XOFF)?
If so, try switching to hardware flow-control (RTS/CTS).
