freezing up

Whenever I run Ad-Aware, Spybot,or any virus scanner
including online scanners, my computer will freeze up
about 1/2 to 3/4 the way through. doesn't always freeze
up at the same spot. Any ideas? Really don't want to
reload windows, but as of right now seems like my only
option.

Try running chkdsk /f and see if it finds any problems.

Have you had a look in the event viewer for a clue...?
