freezing @ restart

Each time my pc restarts after a download or intall, it displays the pc logo
and then freezes. Just turning it off and back on doesn't work unless I
detach all the accessories other than the monitor, mouse and keyboard. In
fact, I don't even log off my pc anymore as every now and then, it freezes
when I boot up. (New to XP)

This happened to me a while ago when I had a laptop. It was because I had
too many peripherals plugged into USB and PCMCIA ports. What external
devices do you have?

3 printers (laser/fax, photo, color inkjet) , 1 scanner, digicam card reader,
cable modem; think that's too much? It worked on an earlier install of xp
(tried my son's copy for 2 weeks before I installed my own copy). TIA.

You know, I'm not sure why it happens. It could be that it worked beforehand
and that one of the updates for Windows XP somehow conflicts with that many
devices being plugged in at startup. The Microsoft Knowledge Base would
probably have better insight.

It's a lot. You must be using an external USB hub. Is it a self-powered
hub? It should be with that many devices. You might be overtaxing the
USB hub in the laptop by requiring it to supply power to so many
connections.

Use logical process of elimination to narrow down which device(s) may be
causing the problem.
