freezing of folders etc when using windows explorer

Hi, When I open any folder on my desktop then click on the folders option at
the top to get the tree on the left-hand side none of the folders will open
when I click on the '+' sign & the egg timer just freezes & a window displays
'this program is not responding' when I try to close the folder. I have an
external hardrive if that is creating the problem but I've had that for about
3 months & it has never happened before. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey, I just had the same problem. Apparently there is a problem with Update
KB908531. Tried a bunch of stuff but (even though they don't post the
symptoms)the solution is in here:

I tried Option 1 of modifying the registry and it worked like a charm

Option 1 - Modify the registry

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401", without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
field

- Close Registry Editor

Looks like Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531) has struck again.

Seems as though you have Automatic Updates turned on to automatically d/l
and install.

Read the thread from 2 hours ago, subject: Help Automatic Update

Read the entire thread, and head the advice of kurttrail in his response in
that thread.
