Folder tree option missing

Hi Folks,

I'm relating a problem a friend of mine is having. When you double click,
lets say for example "my Documents" from your desktop, a window opens . At
the top of this window you have a button called "Folders". Upon clicking this
button, the column on the left side of the screen changes to a "Folder Tree"
view with all those mini "+" . If I click this "Folders" button again it
changes back to I guess is called the "XP view" (I'm not sure what this is
called). Anyway, the column on the left Now have several options (file &
folder Tasks (3 options), Other Places (4 options), and Details). When my
friend does this on his computer (dell with xp/sp3) he does not get this "xp
view" . This "XP view" column does not exist on his machine. He can only go
to the "Folder tree" or just a full size window. I recall that this is
really a simple thing to correct, but for the life of me, I can't remember.
How can I help him get his machine to show the two types of views? Thanks!

Or maybe you mean Common Tasks as the alternate view? (Folder Option ,
show common tasks in folders)

I'm not sure this will help, but you might try the following suggestion.

This was in the Nov 3 newsletter from http://www.wxpnews.com/

What happened to the folder list in XP Explorer?

QUESTION:
Here's a mystery. When I open Windows Explorer in my XP computer now, on the
left side where there used to be a list of the drives and folders, now it's
just blank. I've installed some programs but I don't know which one caused
this or even if that was the cause. Is there any way to track down the
culprit and fix it? I'd be thrilled if you can help me fix it without
reinstalling the operating system! - Kendrick C.

ANSWER:
It's not a unique problem and it's usually caused by a problem in the
registry. Sometimes when you install or uninstall applications, this can
happen. You don't have to figure out what application was at fault in order
to fix it, though. It can be done with a registry fix, and you don't even
have to manually edit the registry because someone else has done it for you.
Just download the file at the end of this article and run it (but back up
your registry first, as you always should do before making changes to it):

Hello powerwalk, Thanks for passing on that article. I don't really think I
need to be doing any registry hacks, but I'll definitely keep this handy. My
friend problem is a little different. He has the "folder tree", but is
missing the alternate view when toggling that "Folder" button at the top.
when I toggle mine I get two different columns on the left side. what I was
calling the "folder tree" view and the "xp" view. When he toggles the
"folder" button, he gets the "folder tree" view, but no "xp" view. This is
what Is missing and looks to be resolve. I thought that fix would be
somewhere in the folder options (tools). Perhap in the "view" tab of folder
options. I don't know. I seem to recall that it is a easy fix. Not as
involved as a registry hack. Sorry if I'm not explaining this probem
properly. But, again I appreciate you taking the time to assist. If you have
any more suggestion I will gladly consider them. Thanks! --

Hi Bob I,

Thanks Bob! I knew this was an easy fix that didn't require any registry
hack. I tried in on my machine and it behaved like my friend computer. I'll
pass this onto him. I believe this will resolve his problem. And yes, That is
what I meant (I was calling the "common Task" view the "xp" view.)
