Freezing - coloured vertical stripes

At random intervals, the computer will freeze and
coloured vertical stripes will appear on the screen. They
are blue, purple, and green from memory, and are
approximately an inch or so wide.

Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

It is a "home-made" computer. Could it have something to
do with the motherboard?

Sounds to me it would be the video card.. If its old i would change it out with a new one..

I had the same problem and had to uninstall my Video drivers and go back to
a older one. It would happen when I was running dual monitors mostly. It is
a Video driver problem.

Yes it was. I had the wrong driver installed. It was the
right brand, wrong model.

Just thought Id post that in case anyone else had a
similar problem.
