Stripy rainbow screen freeze

At random intervals, the computer will freeze and
coloured vertical stripes will appear on the screen. They
are blue, purple, and green from memory, and are
approximately an inch or so wide.

Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Not sure what you have already tried? but start with the basics. Check that your signal cable from monitor to computer is properly connected and secure. The strpies you see are your monitors test pattern. They appear when the monitor is powered on but not receiving a signal from the computer. If your problem is intermittent I suspect thats your problem. If the cable is properly connected and it still happens swap the signal cable for another one to see if that works. if not it could be your video card. If you are comfortable openning your case find your video card and make sure it is properly seated. Let me know if that helps

Thanks for your help and suggestions. You are right, it
was the video card. I had installed the wrong driver,
duh.
