I have a HP portable and it began to freeze when I set the machine down and
walked away. When I come back, I would have to shut the machine down and
start over again. I wiped out the hard drive and re-installed the XP
software again, but it still does the same thing. So I am guessing that this
is hardware and not software.....any ideas as to how to find out what it is
and correct?

Unless your skilled in diagnosing laptop hardware, your best bet is a
reputable repair shop, but I would guess it may be overheating. You could
try running hard drive and memory diags as well just to rule those items
out.

unfortunately, I don't think
over heating is the cause
for freezing.

if anything, the over heating
would cause the system to
shut down or reboot because
of the built in protection.

Depends on the laptop and it's age, locking up can be a sign of overheating
as well

I second that. If the CPU is overheating, it may be going into a
halt state. Most laptop overheating is usually a result of internal
dust build up blocking airflow. So, a good cleaning may be all
that's needed. Canned air sprayed into the vents and fan openings
may accomplish this, but the bottom cover may have to be removed
for greater access.

fair enough and I can
understand this
possibility.

however, if the cpu froze
as a result of over heating,
then it may be fried.

hence, the necessity for
the shut down or rebooting
in order to terminate the power,
cool down the component
and protect it from damage.
