Scannow Freezes Computer and Won't Run in Safe Mode

Scannow gets halfway through a scan and freezes my XP Pro SP3 computer,
requiring a hard shut down. When I try to run it in Safe Mode, it won't open.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
