Freeze on startup

I have been having a couple of (related?) problem recently. I'm using
windows xp sp1. When i turn on the computer, I no-longer get the winxp
logo, just a blank screen. Eventually windows loads though. This is
weird... I've also found that winxp loads considerably faster (during
this black screen) when the space bar is held down (maybe any key?) -
a difference of say 15 seconds with space held down and 2 minutes+
without it.

My second problem is that when i've logged in windows loads all the
way, then normally freezes, the mouse stops moving, keyboard stops
responding and computer hard disk stops it's activity (sometimes the
HD light stays on). No errors appear on the screen. I've left it for
up to say half an hour, with no change. Restarting the computer
sometimes fixes it, sometimes not (around 1 in 4 times). Using
control+alt+delete to end all but around 8 processes that windows
needs (svchost etc), and this tends to fix the problem.

Occasionally this final problem happens once the computer has been
running for a bit. Often after a period of high hard disk activity
(say extracting large files or similar), though this seems to happen
in a wide variety of programs, not one specific one.

I'll try to post a list of running processes for one of the crashes
later on if I get a change (i.e. it crashes).

Thanks!
