Freeze on Startup

My puter's been running for last 4 days. I thought
it was shut down. Anyway I noticed she was frozen on the
desktop. Tried to restart, but couldn't get anything to
respond. Had to shut down from the tower.
Now all she'll do is get to the desktop, load desktop
icons. No taskbar or system tray loads. And yup she's a
frozen......
I don't want to forfeit all data, additional
software, etc..... Just got backup software, but haven't
had a chance to install and use.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try the system file checker tool, click on your start,

run box, type in this; sfc /scannow with that space after
the sfc, and have a XP CD ready to put in to copy any
needed system files from, borrow one if you dont have 1.
