Freeware with functionality of Norton Ghost?

S

Syd Barrett

Hello all,
I seek a freeware app that has the functionality of Norton Ghost. I
need it to do the following: take my drive and image it so that I can
burn the image to an external USB DVD burner, and then later restore
the image. I am upgrading from a 40GB to a 120GB drive (the OS is
Windows 2003 server) and don't want to have to set everything back up
since there's a lot of data and installed apps on that server. I
googled backup software and there are lots of hits: I'm just looking
for some guidance on this group for what you think some top freeware
picks are. :)

.... et :

- les disques graveurs USB ?
- les graveurs DVD ? Double-couche ?
- les disques/graveurs FireWire ?
- restaurer à partir d'un réseau ?

A noter que la quasi totalité des machines que je vend n'ont plus,
depuis un an, de lecteur de disquettes.

This is one of the few areas in which Freeware hasn't come up trumps (
yet ), and I guess there's also the need for trust in such an
important application.

I've used Ghost for many years now - it's often bundled with
motherboards - but I've also used Paragon's excellent Drive Backup,
often found on computer magazine cover disks ( Drive Backup 6 is on
the PCPlus cover disk this month ).

You really have a surprising way to convince others to use linux. I
doubt this will help.

Which linuzbased program can make partition images like ghost, so you
can look inside the image and copy into and out of the image like it
was a zip file?

DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and
backing up partitions and logical drives.
The program allows you to:
# Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
# Browse these images, view and extract files

Can you change files in the image too, and copy files into the image?

A lot less like McDonalds and more like the real world. MC takes his
chances in French. If he gets a hit, great. If not <shrug>. But
there's no need to impose an "international standard" where there is
none.

I speak Portuguese (my main language), average English and some Spanish;
so, if someone replies, says, in French, the post is of no use for me.

The official language of the Internet is English, IMHO, not because it
is the mostly used (otherwise, it could as well be Chinese, but Chinese
is only spoken in China), but because it is the mostly accepted.

Hi Renan!

I don't think it does have to do with acceptance :)

Spanish and Portuguese is also heavily used....

So you don't think that having the ability to run an imaging program
while the server is still operational is a good idea?
Or the ability to add to or extract data from said images - again,
while the server is still running?

As per your usual gobshite, the productivity factor escapes you.
Bless.

No I don't think you can do either of those, and I'm not really sure why
you would want to.

If your operating system becomes damaged by a virus, so it cannot be
started, you can make a ghost image of it, and then restore an earlier
image so you can run the system again.

Then use ghost explorer to study the image of the damaged system,
remove the virus damaged files, replace them with undamaged files, and
then you can restore the damaged system, now fixed and working again.

It's like if your car breaks down along the road, or crashes into a
rock wall, you don't have to just leave it at the roadside and get a
new car. You take a picture of the wreck with your ghost camera first,
and then you get a new car so you can get home again.

When you come home you can study the ghost picture of the crashed car,
and repair it, and start using it again. Or you can pick out the
valuable stuff you had in the crashed car, like your handbag, your
specially made motor and exhaust system, and use those things in your
new car.

That's why norton ghost is better than powerquest drive image which
allows only copying files out of the image, and better than "partition
saving" (freeware) which doesn't have any exploring functions at all.

There is still no freeware imaging program which allows changing the
image like norton ghost.

I prefer ghost version 8, There are higher versions now with new and
often strange differences. google for "norton ghost versions" and you
will find a lot of interesting reading.

http://ghost.radified.com/ for example, very good info

It depends. But I expect English to be widely understood in almost any
country.

Spanish and Portuguese is also heavily used....

Mainly because Spanish and Portuguese are rather similar.

(snipped stuff about cars)

Thanks for the explanation, though I still don't think it sounds like a
very useful feature. Each to their own I suppose.
