Norton Ghost

Hello:

I am trying to clone my hard drive using Norton Ghost. I know this is
a freeware newsgroup but I hope someone can help me figure this out. I
reboot my computer with my start up disk to get into dos (minimal
boot). Then I put in my Norton Ghost floppy disk and type a:ghost.exe
or c:ghost.exe but nothing happens at either prompts. The words bad
command are shown. I am following what the directions tell me to do
but it does not work. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thank you

In the past I have booted FROM the Norton Ghost disk and it has worked.

I believe the command is ghostpe(.exe) - the extension is optional provided
there is only 1 file of that name

if this doesn't work type 'dir' at the prompt to see a list of the file
names. You may find that the (ghost) executable is in a subdirectory (mine
is)...

you need to have a \ after the : ie a:\

Thank you both for your help. I checked the floppy and the ghost
executable is inside of a folder. I will try your advice and see what
happens.

Thanks

Not to be critical, but if your understanding of DOS commands is this slim,
you might want to re-think whether you can ghost a drive and the
successfully restore it anyway. If you have a friend somewhere who has used
Ghost, it might be a good idea to ask for live help.

I believe the syntax you need is a:\ghost.exe

You have the text out of order to start a program.

I tried the commands you suggested and they don't work. I tried
a:ghost.exe, a:ghostpe.exe, a:ghostpe.(exe) and I tried them the way
Symantec suggests at the c prompt, none of them work. If I try
Sonnsa's suggestion it would look like ghost.exe a:\
Could someone tell me if this is correct?

Thank you

Don't boot from a start-up disk and then insert the Ghost disk. Instead,
use the Ghost boot disk and boot from that. If you don't have a Ghost boot
disk, create one then boot from it. When you do, you won't have to use any
DOS commands. The Ghost program will come up and from there on it's fairly
straightforward although I wouldn't say easy. JG

sounds like the correct path will be a:\ghost\ghostpe.exe (this presumes
that the executable is in a folder called 'ghost' and that the executable
is in fact call 'ghostpe.exe' - you will need to insert the appropriate
path names for your install)

best option would be to add this as the last line in the autoexec.bat file
so you never have to worry about it (it should start automagically).

If you're not happy/confident in doing this, ask your friends if any of
them can walk you through it

Thank you for your help but your advice does not work either. I am
using version 7.5 if that helps at all.

I was directing my comment towards Dwight. I see in the directions on
how to create a ghost boot disk. I will give it my best shot. Thank
you for everyones time and help.

I've bookmarked but have yet to use this Norton Ghost tutorial which was
recently recommended to me: http://ghost.radified.com/ Perhaps you will
find the explanations there more helpful than the ones in the Ghost user's
manual. I'm still in the process of getting around to the essential task of
backing up my system with Ghost.

Good luck,
Ian.

I am trying to clone my hard drive using Norton Ghost. I know this
is a freeware newsgroup but I hope someone can help me figure this
out.

Please don't ask here about how to use the commercial programs you
have purchased.

Dan, this group is supposed to be for the discussion of freeware.
Discussion of commercial software is TOTALLY off topic. Next time,
please take your question to a more appropriate group. You'll get
better answers most likely, and this group will not be cluttered with
off topic software discussion.

Quite. Ghost is complicated and antiquated - for geeks only. Get Acronis
true Image which will make an image of your active partiton without your
even having to leave Windows - all with the help of a wizard.. When you need
to restore, the bootable True Image CD provides a GUI that looks almost like
Windows and leads you through the process with an idiot-proof wizard..
You'll never get another DOS "bad command" again.

This is my most valued program. The only fault is that it doesn't write
images to CD very reliably. I always write the image to my backup partition
(although I have it backed up on CD too). It's been 100% reliable so far.
