Appreciate if acf remains about *freeware programs*. :)

You mean I bought Acronis True Image for nothing and there's a freeware
equivalent?

Don't keep it to yourself, Boomer!

The easiest way to issue DOS commands is to log onto the drive where the program is located.
To do this, put your disk in drive A:\ and type:

A:
<press enter>

GHOST (or whatever the program name is)
<press enter>

Or as one person commented, boot from A:\ with the Ghost disk.
It's great to have a DOS question! :)

Hello:

I am trying to clone my hard drive using Norton Ghost. I know this is
a freeware newsgroup but I hope someone can help me figure this out. I
reboot my computer with my start up disk to get into dos (minimal
boot). Then I put in my Norton Ghost floppy disk and type a:ghost.exe
or c:ghost.exe but nothing happens at either prompts. The words bad
command are shown. I am following what the directions tell me to do
but it does not work. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thank you

Ghost isn't that hard to work with even for someone new. Once you get the
hang of it you will be able to clone a drive or restore a drive in a few
minutes.

Next time you might want to put OT in the subject when you post about out
topic stuff.

But of course, the only excuse for discussing commercial software in
this group is when using it as an example of a (the) feature(s) one is
looking for in a freeware program. The (O.T.) inclusion was never
intended to be used as a means of starting a discussion purely about
commercial software.

Your wish is my command Boomer )

I require a freeware version of Ghost, DI, Trueimage or
Instantrecovery etc. I have tried some of these programs or the trial
versions, on an old computer which uses an add-on ATA controller. None
of those tested have worked to date each suffering a different
problem.

The program must work with Win98 / DOS and save/recover to/from
cdr-rw. The machine cannot boot from CD.

Oh? Is that another rule you just made up?

: Quite. Ghost is complicated and antiquated - for geeks only. Get Acronis
: true Image which will make an image of your active partiton without your
: even having to leave Windows - all with the help of a wizard.. When you need
: to restore, the bootable True Image CD provides a GUI that looks almost like
: Windows and leads you through the process with an idiot-proof wizard..
: You'll never get another DOS "bad command" again.
:
: This is my most valued program. The only fault is that it doesn't write

: (although I have it backed up on CD too). It's been 100% reliable so far.

Would using a CD checking program like CDCheck help with the fault of not writing reliable CD inages?
I'd make a 2nd backup as well. There's too much to use.
