Free Web Storage - suggestions to meet criteria please

I realise that this request isn't strictly freeware but I am looking
for help about free Web storage.

I help with a Computer Group (no funds) and currently make freeware
available by putting the programmes on the Clubs PC and ask members to
bring a CD in if they wish to download. (Hope this doesn't contravene
distribution rights)

A suggestion has been made that it would be easier if the software was
made available for download off the Internet. Rather than simply give
out the original web site details, (even then some of the freeware is
old and I don't believe the files are currently available on the
Internet) it crossed my mind to put them on a publicly or password
accessed Web storage site.

My research of them so far shows various limitations for the Free
versions.

1 Files are removed after a short time
2 A file size download limit is often applied eg 10mb
3 EXE files are not to be used at some (I envisage WinRar'ing or
ZIPping the larger files

The number of members likely to use this is small so I think
limitations on volume of download will not be an issue - I note some
quote 100mb (or near) for a monthly download limit.

Does anyone know of a service which covers this list?

Research so far leans towards Streamload.com

Anyone with alternative ways to handle this?

Set up a FTP server

Thank you.

I am researching the choices.

The first I looked at appeared suitable - "GoldenFTPServer" but the
reviews at www.download.com suggest there are things to avoid. Mention
made of keylogger, trojan etc. Does anyone have reassuring comments
about this before I move on?

Also starting to find that WinXP or 2000 is minimum for the ones I
have looked at.

Any free ftp programme that is easy to use which also accomodates
Win98?

Quite honestly what you are suggesting looks to me that at least unethical,
and in many cases in violation of the licensing agreements that come with
the programs. Taking other people's programs and distributing them is
illicit, even if they are freeware. Many authors obtain funds that help
support their efforts by donations, or click-through adverts. Your method
removes this opportunity.

You should either link to the sites that they are sourced from, or at the
very least. get agreement from the authors to distribute in this way.

I was rather doubtful whether to do this, as I touched on in my first
post.

This is a computer group of people aged over 65 and the distribution
is unlikely to exceed half a dozen people.

The programmes are actually the likes of AIDA16 and old versions of
freeware eg MusicMatch Jukebox from years ago - a lot smaller in size
than current versions. So the number of programmes is going to be
small.

The situation occurs whilst demonstrating certain activities and then
mentioning what type of software will achieve the same result or
something similar.

A typical example would be screen capture which would cover the
"PrintScrn" button approach and also MWSnap. When interest is shown by
the members they are, in the main, not on the Internet or in many
cases not capable of going through some of the sites where such
software would appear.

The practice has been to tell them to either bring in a floppy or CD
at future meetings to overcome the difficulty in obtaining the
programme for themselves.

To some extent I doubt that this contravenes the distribution
requirements of many producers of free software but I am conscious
that it would be frowned upon and may be met with disapproval from
some.

Clearly this is wrong as the ones not on the Internet won't be able to
retrieve the files anyway. It is still valid to say that they would
either not find some of the files - old. Or would be deterred from
seeking out the appropriate sites..

I agree with your thought but would disagree with the comment "in many
cases in violation..." I would say in some cases. It's been my
experience with freeware that most allow redistribution and that some do
not.

I didn't see a list of apps. from the OP, maybe I missed it though.
Without knowing what programs are involved, I would assume that most of
them could be distributed.

My advice would be that any freeware being considered to be distributed
should have the licesnse agreement reviewed, if one exists, and abide by
it.

Spot on observation. My experience suggests that freeware EULAs
prohibiting the type of redistribution described by the OP would be
the rare exception rather than the rule.

There is no list of freeware. The request from members was to make
anything used in demonstrations available for download from a storage
site.

In view of the concerns about distribution and the difficulty in
tracing some of the original producers of the software, I am leaning
towards simply telling them to either find it for themselves on the
Internet or just saying no.

You may consider...any app. you'd like to distribute, just check the
license. If that doesn't help, post here and ask if anyone has a copy of
the license and/or ask for alternative programs. There is a ton of
distributable freeware for *almost* any need. :)
