Free Antivirus suggestions

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, DSL and presently have AVG,
Comodo, SpywareBlaster, and Hive Cleanup as well as System Mechanic.
I'm on a fixed income and really can't afford to buy too much. Within
a day or so my free AVG version will no longer be supported and I was
wondering if there is another free version I could use? Avast?
Kaspersky? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Robert

AVG 7.5 will no longer be supported, but a free version 8 has been around
for a while now.

If you like AVG simply go to their web site and download version 8.0X,
uninstall version 7.5 and then install the newer version. (The new version
will uninstall the older version but I had issues with the automatic
uninstall on one of my systems. The other 3 went without a hitch.

The download can be had at: http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Just be aware that AVG 8.0 adds features not found in previous
releases. Specifically AVG 8 adds a "Link Scanner" that can be
a problem. AVG 8 also tries to slip a Security Toolbar into it's
setup. If you use AVG 8.0 you'll want to consider disabling the
Link Scanner and then setting it as an ignored feature or the icon
in the system tray will always show a warning state.

AVG 8 FREE replaces AVG 7.5 FREE.

I went to the AVG site and I don't see where version 8.0 is free, also
given the fact that it adds a link scanner and attempts to add a
toolbar I think I would rather try something different. Can anyone
suggest something as good as AVG 7.5 but without all the bells and
whistles?

Thanks,

Robert

It doesn't co-habit with other spyware scanners either, but I would have
thought that System mechanic is more of a threat than AVG.. :)

There are many good free AV applications available, and almost everyone has
his favorite. Most of the users are emotionally attached to their AV
application and will have excellent reasons for not recommending any other
brand.
The most important thing here is that all of the available choices listed
here are better in some respects than in others, and which choice is better
for *you* depends on what you do, how you work, and which features you use.
The way you use your PC is different from others.
Have a look at this:

and be guided accordingly.
Good info can be obtained here:

If the above is too deluging consider this:-
Real-time AV applications - for viral malware.
Do not utilize more than one (1) real-time anti-virus scanning engine!
Disable the e-mail scanning function during installation (Custom
Installation on some AV apps.) as it provides no additional protection.

A-S applications - for non-viral malware.
The effectiveness of an individual A-S scanners can be wide-ranging and
oftentimes a collection of scanners is best. There isn't one software that
cleans and immunizes you against everything. That's why you need multiple
products to do the job i.e. overlap their coverage - one may catch what
another may miss, (grab'em all).

and worms to install to the OS.
Interesting reading:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136195/article.html
"...Windows Defender did excel in behavior-based protection, which detects
changes to key areas of the system without having to know anything about
the actual threat."

A clarification on the terminology: the word "malware" is short for
"malicious software." Most Anti-Virus applications detect many types of
malware such as viruses, worms, trojans, etc.
What AV applications usually don't detect is "non-viral" malware, and the
term "non-viral malware" is normally used to refer to things like spyware
and adware.

Whatever you choose, steer away from WLOC!

Good luck :)

Well, I'm not emotional about it... but here's .02 worth:

AVG 8 (Free) is a pig. I say that having been a big AVG fan for
several years. V8 has all sorts of issues - the biggest being the web
link scanner which brings many systems to their knees. They do have a
procedure for disabling it but the program is still a pig.

I've moved to Avast. A very nice program overall. No complaints so
far. The only feature I shut off is the VRDB (restore database)
generation as I don't like any performance inhibitors and I am willing
to run on the edge a little.

I downloaded AVG 8.0 without the toolbar after I uninstalled version
7.5 and all seems well. Thank you very much for your help and
suggestions.
