FP98 password problem

After correcting problems on my hard drive, I needed to
reload FP98. Now I've made updates to an already existing
website and wanted to upload the changes. Clicking on
publish, it appears that I've got to start from the
beginning as when I originally uploaded the site. It now
asks me for my password in order to do this. I've never
used a password. I can't change it unless I know the
original, which doesn't exist. I tried Permissions but it
won't let me add, delete or make changes. I've changed
the setting to "local website" after trying to change it
on the Personal Web. Whatever instructions I follow
(online or through FP98 help), I'm unable to alter,
delete, add or find a way to get past this. Is there a
way around this?

The password does exist, or it wouldn't be prompting you for one. Contact
your hosting service, and get them to change the password to one of your
choosing.

You need to contact your host to reset your login info, and since you
re-install FP, you will need to do a full publish, then turnaround and do a
Change Page only publish.

This has nothing to do with the hosting server. I click
on "Publish". It prompts me with the window asking for
the location. I type that in. The next thing that
appears is a window that states: "This operation requires
author permission for <Root Web>". There is a box for
Name and Password. I'm not as far as putting in the name,
password, etc. for uploading the site. It's not that
window. I found a location on this site that tells me
what to do if even putting in the correct information
doesn't work and how to change it. The problem is when I
do that via "Tools" and then "Permission", it won't let me
make any changes.

When you select to publish the web, destination server is the one asking for
the password, so where are you trying to publish to?

No. It is not the host server asking for the password.
It is FrontPage asking for a user name and password in
order to author the site. It has nothing to do with the
server. I don't know how to make that more clear. I
finally reloaded FrontPage98 and whatever that did changed
things. I was then able to click on publish, type in the
location in the next window and then, instead of getting
the *&^*) window asking for a the user name and password,
it went directly to the window that needs the information
to actually publish it online. That went without a
hitch. The changes have now been uploaded.

Ok, so it was actually your local web that was requiring the login by FP.
