FP2002 SP3 Publishing error need help "The server sent a response.

G

Guest

I have one clients PC that has a problem and formatting isn't really an
option..

He opens a disk based web and tries to publish and recieves "the server send
a response which frontpage could not parse. If you are trying to connect to a
frontpage server, check with the server administrator to make sure the
frontpage extensions are properly configured".

I have eliminated it being a server error as I had the client log onto
another PC and the publish works just fine.

On this PC in particular, we also recieve an error when trying to add a web
folder. The ERRORS are specific to this one particular website that he is
trying to publish to.

I deleted his Windows XP user profile on that PC and recreated it and we
were then able to add the web folder no problem, but still could not publish.
After troubleshooting the publish problem, now we can't access that web
folder!!!!!!

Most information I find on the net says something about having a firewall
preventing communication between the application and the server. This isn't
the case here...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Andre.

Jim et al,

I'm running FP2003 on Win XP Pro with .NET Framework 1.1 installed.

I just installed Win XP Pro SP2 and now get the same error that started this
thread. Before the SP2 install, everything was fine with FP2003 web sites
both on my hard disk and at ISP's servers.

Now, when I try to open a local FP website on my XP desktop hard disk, It
pops the error:
"The server sent a response which FrontPage could not parse. If you are
trying to connect to a SharePoint Services server, check with the server's
administrator to make sure Windows SharePoint Services is installed
properly."

I have a stand alone desktop, no network other than connection to the
Internet through DSL. I do not have SharePoint nor Win Server 2000/2003
installed.

The error does not occur when I open websites on my ISPs server using
FP2003.

I followed the advice at
http://www.interlacken.com/winnt/tips/tipshow.aspx?tip=24 with no
improvement. Portions of the tip could not be completed because I cannot
open any of ten local FP web sites on my HD.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

This is a tough issue. There seems be a minor rash of such incidents
occurring lately, usually following a Windows XP SP2 upgrade.
Unfortunately, no one has found a reliable fix yet.

Most people who install SP2 *don't* have this problem. I haven't seen
it myself, for example, which is too bad in a way, because then I'd
have a better chance of fixing it.

I have one site that I publish by FTP, and I had to check Use Passive
FTP in order to get that to work. But I presume you're publishing by
HTTP, so that option wouldn't apply.

It *doesn't* seem to be the SP2 firewall. Turning that on and off
hasn't made Publishing work or fail for anyone, as far as I know. If
you can browse the remote site, you have enough of a network path to
publish to it.

Has you PC been though a lot of upgrades? For example, did it ever
have FP2000 or FP2002 installed? Any (shudder) betas?

Had similiar problem with my ISP and FP2002. Just could not publish
any web site front page extensions included in the web site. Alway
received the error to the effect that require frontpage extension on
the host site. They had them installed and my web page was even on a
Windows based server. The ISP even went to extreme measures of
reinstalling the extensions. Never solved the problem until upgrading
to FP2003 and all problems went away.

With FrontPage closed, enter the following in Start > Run or the IE address bar and click OK or GO
as appropriate.
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Delete everything that shows in the folder.

Then do the same for: %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

Yep, I said delete "everything" that shows in both folders.

Then reopen FrontPage and the web.

obtw, Deleting a user profile in an attempt to fix a program problem is *not* a good idea imho.
