FoxMail Questions?

S

SeaWolf

Seems that lots of folks like FoxMail so I picked it up to try. I'm guessing
that lots of folks out there are using this program. I set it up and it
seems to work well for Pop mail but not so good with HotMail.

I went through all the instructions and I seem to have everything right.
I've turned off everything that I think would interfear with this program.
I'm using Naviscope Ad blocker and a really old version of ZoneAlarm. I shut
these two programs down completely.

FoxMail with the Hotmail email set up will initiate the log in screen with
no problems. I get to the point where it says pass <...> and stops. I'm not
logging in for some reason.

My OE still works but I'm trying to go to FoxMail because everyone says its
better then OE.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

to have more chance with hotmail:
-assure you that your hotmail account accept webdav access (Microsoft
progressively make this access unavailable for free) -> ask hotmail support
-don't use antivirus mail scanning or configure ports between foxmail and
foxhot.exe on non standard TCP ports
-configure your firawall to let foxhot.exe request tcp/port 80 to any
destination
My OE still works but I'm trying to go to FoxMail because everyone says its

not better, different ;-)
Any ideas?

For my regular POP3 email I use Thunderbird. But this does not allow me
to read Hotmail which I occasionally get, so for that I use Foxmail.
(I wont use OE for anything.)

I'm running Foxmail on a PC with Windows98SE, ZoneAlarm Free Edition
Firewall, AVG Virus Scanner (including Email scanner activated) and a
broadband dsl connection. And I have no problems at all.

I added my Hotmail details very simply:

Under Account Property, these are the details I have entered:

SMTP Server: localhost
SMTP Server Needs Authentication: ticked
POP3 Server: localhost
POP3 Account: (e-mail address removed)
Password: mypassword
Autostart Foxmail-Hotmail Proxy; ticked

And nothing more. I didnt change any other settings.

Hope this might help,
Yours truly,
Ed

Oh, I should have added that of course, this only works for my old
Hotmail account. Newer Hotmail accounts can't be downloaded to Foxmail
(or OE), but you probably know this, though others might not be aware.

Yes I have a very old HotMail account! My setup looks just like yours too!
Wow I wonder what's going on!
I'm using FoxMail 5.0.800.0

Just wondering, when you log into your HotMail account your Login screen
comes up right? What does it tell you?

Do you get the following:
Connection
User name
Pass <...>
Retreve message
logout.
This is what I get for my Pop accounts.

For Hotmail I just get Pass<...>
Then it stops there!
Also the Hotmail Proxy comes up!

I also have ZoneAlarm (turned off)
I have Naviscope ad blocking (turned off)
I have E-Trust AntiVirus

So from what you tell me it should work!
If you have ideas let me know!
Thanks!

Does E-Trust interfere with FoxMail Hotmail! I've been hearing that its
possible that E-Trust mail scanner uses the same proxy settings as Foxmail.
The result is that they collide at some point! Avast seems to have the same
problem.

I know that localhost is used by many programs. I'm not sure how Localhost
works. I think it an address 127.0.0.1 that is used to point the computer to
a internal program. The browser is pointed to 127.0.0.1 which actually is
the address of a program like E-Trust then E-Trust goes out to the net. Well
if FoxMail is also set to 127.0.0.1 there will be a collision of sorts. You
can't have FoxMail and E-Trust both being 127.0.0.1 I guess. I'm not sure if
this is true.

I also have the problem of Naviscope also being a proxy of 127.0.0.1 so now
I have three programs all trying to use the same address. What I do find
interesting is that Naviscope has no problems with E-Trust at all so I'm
confused big time!

I set the E-Trust to snooze to see if that would make a difference! Nothing!

Oh well, this is interesting! I'm sure there is someone out there who has
these problems. I get idea that you use FoxMail and E-Trust! Do you have
these problems too?

Thanks!

try to disable, one after the other, Naviscope AND E-Trust (particullary
it's email scanning feature) to kill doubt...
if E-Trust make collision with foxhot.exe (hotmail proxy for foxmail) on
110/25 port try to set non standard (3110 & 3025) ports in hotmail's
foxmail account (properties > server > advanced) and in foxhot.exe (service
options > port tab)
if Naviscope block foxhot.exe when it request MS servers on port80,
configure Naviscope ;-)

Its like using 110/25 its going out there and nothing is responding at all

do you configure 3110/3025 ports in Foxmail *AND* foxhot.exe (use tools

do you configure 3110/3025 in hotmailaccount in foxmail (with localhost as

have you got any other proxy or software listening on 110/25 ports

turn off antivirus AND naviscope and try again, if hotmail's server still
unaccessible, i think your account becomes unavailable in webdav access

nothing. (sometimes F-Prot to determine virus i detect with my eyes and

No, I turned off everything including antivirus. I can only think that
what's happening is that for some reason Hotmail isn't answering up! It just
sits out there and waits causing FoxMail to wait on it long enough till it
times out.

What's interesting is that when I change my port settings as you have told
me I get the same hung Pass <...> like its waiting for my password to clear.
What's interesting is that when using Hotmail I don't see the login screen
comming up with USER first. If you watch your login screen you will see it
starts with Connection, then User, then Pass! I only see pass comming up.
I'm kind of wondering why?

I would think that FoxMail would have to give the user name first, just like
pop mail. Maybe its doing it so fast you can't see it. Pop isn't so fast and
you can see USER come up. This is strange, but interesting!!!

Again when I have everything set up as you tell me I get Pass <...> and
that's it. If I do anything wrong I get an error message. So it would really
be interesting to know what's happening. I get curious, just kind of want to
know what's happening.

I think its because Hotmail is different from Pop mail! I notice that Pop
mail has Port settings where Hotmail doesn't. I don't see anything about
Proxy settings anywhere! It looks like OE shares internet connections with
IE. Yes, this seems to be the case. Naviscope should interfere but when I
turn it off its off. I checked and the 127.0.0.1 goes away.

So, OK, OE and IE share the proxy settings.

foxhot.exe (the hotmail proxy) converts POP3 standard request from Foxmail
to http proprietary format to MS web servers, so the first connection/user
commands is to fast to be seen, because it 's done at localhost level.
after the PASS transaction is very slower than many standard POP3 servers
so we can see it better ;-)

Yes I can use OE to get hotmail! Works great!
What's so strange is that I did turn off everything that could mess this up!
I had absolutely nothing running that could interfere. So this is very
strange indeed! I wonder if other folks are having this problem too?

so, if you are sure that *nothing" can interfer on 110/25 local ports and
block external request/answers on port 80, you can try this cool debug
procedure:

-configure again foxmail and foxhot.exe to use standard 110/25 ports

-run foxmail
-tools menu > lauch hotmail proxy

-in windows taskbar > start > run > telnet localhost 110

-in telnet session, you must see "+OK Hotmail Proxy POP3 Service Ready"
if so, type:
USER your_hotmail_login
you must see "+OK Password need for your_hotmail_login", is type:
PASS your_hotmail_password
you must see "+OK maildrop ready", if so type :
LIST
you must see "+OK xx messages (xxx bytes)" if so all is working from proxy
to microsoft server, so configure foxmail correctly :)
if these steps doesn't work as tehy must, see foxhot configuration (report
me all options tab contents please) or any other http connection problems
(are you using a LAN with gateway/routers ?)

No LAN or gateway/rounters in use!
Turned off firewalls
Turned off Ad blockers
Turned off AntiVirus
Localhost 127.0.0.1 is set to FoxMail-HotMail Proxy and is getting out! When
firewall is engaged it asked for permission for the following:
Microsoft Telnet Client both Local and Internet
Internet Mail Client 5.0 Local and Internet
Formail-Hotmail Proxy Application Allow server

Thank you for this information! I did as you instructed!
I typed in my user name and my password.
Nothing happens after I type in my password!

When I use Telnet it does start out with
"+OK Hotmail Proxy POP3 ServiceReady[I Safe POP3 Proxy]"
I type in User (e-mail address removed)
I then get
"+OK Password need for your_hotmail_login"
I type in Pass "password" with no ""
Everything stops here just like on my Foxmail login popup!
Interesting.
I know TelNet is working because my firewall did come up and ask for
permission to allow. I said yes and the connection was made.

I see what you did! Basically you have bypassed FoxMail and utilized the
Foxmail-Hotmail program directly. Good idea!

I'm wondering if XP has some kind of permissions or some safety controls
built in that keeps programs like Foxmail-Hotmail proxy from running. I am
the admin! WinXP Pro is a little strange in that its got allot more
protections then other programs. But as I'm the only user on this machine
I'm logged into admin mode I do believe. I can access everything! I don't
see anything limiting ports. I do have spybot and spyblaster on my computer!
But I don't think they stop anything from happening.

I should be able to use Telnet to hook up to other servers like I used to do
with Win98. I can't remember as I haven't used Win98 in years but there was
a program allot like Telnet that you could use to test internet connections.
I think it was called HyperTerminal! The program Telnet seems much more
limited so far. I tried for example to do the command "o www.msn.com"s. That
should have allowed me to connect to msn, giving me a login. I'm not getting
a connection! Just says I can't connect on port 23! Now if I attempt to use
command "o www.pacn.com" I get "Please hit any key to continue" Can't get
any further then that but this shows a connection being made. I notice that
if you use Start\RUN and then "telnet www.pacn.com" it starts out and you
see just for a second "Please hit any yet to continue" At that point if I
try anything the program closes up and goes away.

I may be going down a rabbit trail. It could be that msn is port sensitive!
Or I may not even know what I'm talking about here! ;)

This is interesting!
Hope the info helps!
Thanks again! :)

I didn't configure a proxy in foxhot? It does this itself! I unchecked it,
no differance. I think they use Foxhot proxi because that's how foxhot talks
to foxmail. Foxmail with pop doesn't use foxhot. But when foxmail is trying
to talk to hotmail it needs an interpreter so foxhot module is engaged as a
go between. The two programs talk to each other through local host..

Naviscope does use a proxy of 127.0.0.1 but I turned it off! When you turn
off Naviscope it reconfigures things so that no proxy exists.

I have noticed that I can't Ping anything from Dos! I find that interesting
because in Win98 I could Ping stuff. Can't do a Tracert either! I'm
wondering if XP has all the ports closed or something! I used to Ping
www.msn.com as a test! Can't connect now! Do you have WinXP and can you Ping
things? This could be a rabbit trail but who knows so I think it would be
good to ask.
Just wondering!
