"File open error" in Foxmail

Recently my mailboxes in foxmail have become unreliable. Every few days
I get an error message saying "File Open Error" and the mailbox (inbox
outbox any or all)refuses to open.
The mailbox repair facility does not repair the box and the only way I
can repair the program is to delete the offending mailbox and make
Foxmail generate a new one on a restart All mailbox content is
therefore lost.
Reinstalling Foxmail having done a previous thorough manual registry
clean only provides a temporary solution. Does anyone know how to deal
with this?
Regards
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

This error is often due to some nasty Antivirus software wich had performed
a .BOX file deletion (or quarantinize)
foxmail, when restarted create a new empty .box but index file doesn't
match...
so you need to, close Foxmail, delete *both* concerned .box and .ind file,
then restart Foxmail
AND configure your antivirus to not destroy more than just a virus !

if, with a great chant, you find your lost .box file again, try to import
it with tools menu > import > foxmail mailbox (don't care index file is
missing, foxmail will import the file with success if it didn't be
coorupted by antivirus :) )

Hello Margaret, Bonjour rm (long time no see :))

Margaret: is the BOX file still there or is it gone like rm says?

rm: Can you still be contacted on the address I have of you? I have a
question for you...

Very interesting. So the box file is destroyed and an empty one put in
it's place ! I was never going to discover that for myself. In fact in
my case, it will not be a virus scanner that is deleting the .box file
it will be a program that I run which deletes junk files and thinks
that .box are junk. I run several of these cleaners but it should not
take too long to find the culprit.
Thank you
Margaret

Hello Dick
Everything RM says makes sense - .box deleted by a
cleaner. Foxmail creates a new empty box so it looks the same to me. I
delete both .box and .ind and now both .box and .ind are recreated and
match until my cleaner deletes .box again.
It just occured to me as I was typing the para above that another
possibility is that the cleaner deletes .ind instead of .box and
Foxmail recreates an empty .ind which then doesn't match the old .box
and gives the same result. I think that is more likely.

Yes the (e-mail address removed) is active and I check it regularly

Got it! I just ran a cleaner called Smart System Cleaner 2.2.1. I then
opened my Foxmail folder in Explorer without running Foxmail.exe. All
..box files deleted in mail folder. Problem solved
Thank you both

Salut Dick,

sorry for Hare's Lair desertion ;-) not time enought to decrypt all posts !

if foxmail cannot open a file, it's probably missing... (sometimes in
access denied by ntfs rights, but it's rare...)

yes, my Hare's Lair profile address is operationnal :)

glad to read you soon.

:p Not so smart this cleaner. If you can set it up to leave folder alone, I
would suggest you set it up to leave the FoxMail folders for what they are.

This problem was reported in the forums a long time ago (and caused by a
different cleaner), but it remains a real problem still <sigh>.

Glad you found the culprit, though!

Salut Pierre,

I will contact you then by it, I have a question or two regarding Resource
Hacker and Foxmail which - as unexperienced as I am in using the first
program - would solve a problem with FM reported in the forums!

Dick
