Word keeps behaving as though the autocorrect option "Define styles based on
your formating" is switched on, even though it isn't. Does anybody know how i
might solve this problem?

Can you provide a more specific description of the behavior you're seeing?

My problem means that for example when i change a part of my document to be
bold, the whole thing becomes bold instead of just the selected part. This
applies to underline, italic, font and font size and also centering

This happens when the current style has the Automatically Update attribute
set. Without knowing which version of Word you're using, it's hard to give
directions. Assuming you're using Word 2003, choose Format - Styles and
Formatting. Right-click the current style (Normal, I'd guess based on your
description) and choose Modify. In the Modify Style dialog box, click to
remove the check next to Automatically Update (near the bottom, right above
the OK button), then click OK.

If this is happening in ALL of your documents... before clicking OK, above,
click to put a check by Add to template. If later prompted to save changes
to Normal.dot, say Yes.
