I've had multiple problems with win 2k locking up. I'm
going to start from scratch and format disk and reinstall
everything. I have 4 partitions. When I go to command
prompt and type format c: After getting the "All data will
be lost message" I do a y and enter. and the I get the
following messages: "Format cannot run because the volume
is in use by another process. Format may run if this
volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS
VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a
dismount on this volume?" I do a y and enter and nothing
happens. Am I missing something here? Thanks!

Yes, your missing something.
You can't format your primary disk while the operating
system is still functioning, nor can you do it from the
cmd shell, you must do it from the install cd.or a boot
floppy.
so, do this set your bios to boot to the cd drive first,
then shut down, power on and insert your install cd in the
cd, let it load and when requested, do the fresh install
with format.
