i have gotten my computer off someone else, and after
running a number of antiviruses/spyware thingies, upon
restarting, i was prompted for a password. how can i
bypass this without taking my computer apart?

Assuming you have the blue user selection screen, try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del-Del (that is, Ctrl+Alt+Del, release Del and hit again while continuing to hold Ctrl+Alt); this should get you to a 'standard' login box. Try the 'administrator' account with a blank password, and see if that helps. Also, if there is a username in the box when it first loads, try submitting it with a blank password before you try the administrator thing. Other than that, I would suggest possibly checking out this blurb and the website it mentions.

Can't login? Lost your WinXP Administrator password?!
NTAccess can replace the administrator password of your WinXP
system by rebooting your computer with a special set of boot
disks or CD-ROM. A great way out if you forgot the Administrator
password and cannot access your XP (NT/2000) system anymore.
It's this or a complete reinstall from scratch and potentially lose
all your stuff! At the Online Shop for just 70 bucks with instant
online delivery.

Please don't post in HTML - all kind of of 'nasties' can be contained in the headers.

Hi

Ask the person that you got the PC from - he/she should know the password. Reboot the PC, at the Welcome screen press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, leave the password blank and press Enter. I won't guarantee that it will work, if it doesn't you're stymied.
