Forgot password?

Hello,

I seem to have forgotten my logon password on my laptop running Windows XP
Pro. Is there a way to bypass the login prompt, or maybe startup in Safe
Mode so I can reset the password???

Thank you!!

Log onto the computer using the Administrator account as follows:
Note: the default password for this account is none (no password)
At the Welcome Screen, do/press the
Ctrl-Alt-Del keys twice to get the classic Windows logon box.
Type in "Administrator" (without the quotes) and whatever password you
assigned (default is no password)
when you set up Windows.

Next click Start/Run
Now in the Run box, enter: control userpasswords2
Then click the OK button
Now click on the user account that you have forgotten the password
Next click Reset Password button
Finally enter a new password, confirm the new password, and then click OK.

See support.microsoft.com/kb/321305 How to log on to Windows XP if you
forget your password or if your password expires.

Note: If you had any encrypted files/folders under the old password,
you'll probably not be able to access them.

XP Pro is a secure system for a reason. You can't simply reset the password
unless you know the Administrator password. If you know that then boot to
the logon screen, press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and change to the Administrator
account, enter your Administrator password and once at the Desktop go to the
Control Panel->User Account to change the password for your usual logon
account.

If you have forgotten the Administrator password you will a third part
password cracker. This one is the best as it doesn't require you to change
the password it simply uncovers it http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ Get the
LiveCD, boot with it and let it do it's thing.

XP Pro is a secure system for a reason.

This is probably the best joke ever... Secured? XP?
Here are step by step instructions on recovering your password with a
Windows installation Disk.
1. Insert your Windows operating system CD
into your CD drive and start your pc. Make sure that the Drive you
selected is the bootable
drive.
2. Usually your computer will state on the screen that it will
now boot from the CD or that you will have to press a specific key to
boot from the CD. Select the key to boot from the CD.
3. Now that the
computer is booting from the CD, you will see an initial set up screen
that says the computer is loading files
4. After the computer loads
some files, a welcome screen will pop up, follow the prompts and press
enter to set up Windows.
5. The next prompt will be the licensing
agreement; press accept.
6. Once you have accepted the licensing
agreement, a set up screen will popup that will give you the option to
do a repair. Select the repair option.
7. The repair option should
start running immediately and might take a few minutes to check your
disks, files, etc.
8. Once the computer has copied files and scanned
your computer it will ask you to reboot your computer or it will
automatically reboot your computer. You might see a message that your
computer will reboot in 10 seconds.
9. When the computer reboots, do
not press any keys. The computer will automatically reboot and you will
see the Windows screen and you will see the message Installing Windows.

10. It is important to keep your eyes on the lower left corner of the
screen. You will see a message pop up. It will state "Installing
Devices". When you see this progress bar, wait about 5 seconds and press
"Shift + F10"
11. When you press Shift + F10 a command console will pop up giving
you access to many system functions.
12. At the prompt enter the
following: NUSRMGR.CPL and press enter. This input will give you access
to your graphical access of your user accounts in your control panel.
13. Since you have forgotten your password, you can choose the account
that you need to change or remove the password from. If you want to
remove your password so that you no longer have to enter it when logging
in, you can enter the following at the command prompt: "control
userpasswords2". Once you have made the changes, close the window and
close the command console. You can now continue with the repair.
14.
Your computer will continue with the repair and ask you for your product
ID, enter your product ID. Once your operating system starts up, you
will be able to access all your user account with either the new
password you created or no password at all. It is important to note that
this strategy does not damage any of your files or settings. All of your
files and settings should be intact.

DO YOU FEEL LUCKY, PUNK?!

Yeah so? When a door is padlocked it is called secured. That doesn't mean a
lock can't be picked if you know how to pick locks however the vast majority
of people don't know how to do it and probably wouldn't care to know how to
do it even if given the opportunity to learn. Just as with lock picking the
vast majority of people don't know how to hack into a passworded system. And
most would take the time to bother to learn how.

Most people would not take time to learn how is what I meant to say.

Holz, this was an interesting procedure. I followed all the steps with a
legit Windows XP Pro install disk from a new Dell Optiplex computer.
Everything seemed to go well. I had access to the user accounts and even
created a new one. However, when the "install repair" finished and the login
screen made its presence, I was not able to do anything--the Ctrl-Alt+Del did
not work: it did not give me the logon screen. Nothing happened. I went back
through the install/repair and removed the new account. (During the process I
was able to get the info I needed to log on.) Was this the result of trying
to create a user account this way? Just curious. I got into Windows and
created the account from there. I just wondered what the problem was. Thanks
for the info.
