Fonts shown by Mac Font Book not available in Word

I have several fonts that Font Book shows as installed that are not available
to Word. These fonts include Arial Bold, Arial Bold Italic, and Arial Italic,
all of which I believe were installed as part of OS 10.4, along with several
other fonts in the Arial family that are available to Word.

How can I get Word to be able to use all the installed fonts?

If you have Arial Bold, Arial Bold Italic, and Arial Italic installed, are
you able to use them in Word?

What happens if you select some Arial text and make it Bold, Italic,
or Bold Italic? Back when I was dealing with Mac fonts, the four
varieties didn't show up separately on the Fonts menu.

This is certainly true in Windows. Bold, italic, and bold italic variants
are never displayed in the Font list; they are applied by formatting the
text as bold, italic, or both.

Making fonts in Fontographer, if you don't set the variant labels
correctly, they will show up as separate fonts -- but then they won't
be called by the Bold, Italic, etc. commands. (You get sloped roman
and bitmapped fattening instead.)

I'm sure that's true no matter how fonts are made, but I have no experience
with fontography.

It appears that Word does use the italic, bold, or bold version of the font
as long it is installed. I posted a message on the Quark board yesterday
analogous to the one I posted here, and I learned that Quark works the same
way.
