Following virus removal, CD-RW will not read or write

I have just been given the computer of a family friend. The system had
never been upgraded to SP2 and was riddled with viruses, trojans and spyware.
All have since been removed.

The only remaining problem is that while the CD-RW is shown as functioning
normally in Device Manager, it will not read or write (to or from any disk)
from within XP. I was able to boot to a Knoppix Live CD so it is not a
hardware issue.

I have tried rolling back, updating and uninstalling the driver. I have
downloaded and installed a firmware upgrade for the CD-RW from Samsung.

At this point, I am more interested in learning the solution to the problem
than reformatting and reinstalling XP.

Any suggestions?

Daniel...
1. I hate to use the old answer but is that drive on the HAL?
2. Will it run in Safe mode with command prompt.
3. And i guess finally... drives are cheep now... so.... :)

I would guess it is a SP2 problem because of the Knoppix test (very cool
prgm btw saved my bacon a few times)
I had a flash drive do the exact same thing with a upgraded Dell ... ended
up getting a new flash drive for cheep.
I would guess you thought of all of this already.

Have you tried using different drivers? Try some generic driver or search the
net if the same drive hasn't been on sale under different brands. If so try
using their drivers.
