Folder view settings

Has anyone else had the problem where the folder view state that you set is
not persisted to the next use of the folder? This happens to me consistently
with the control panel and to a certain extent with other folders. I set it
to details view and the next time I open the folder it is set to medium icon
view. I have checked the folder view settings multiple times but this still
occurs. Is this a bug? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?

'Organize' -> 'Folder & Search Options' -> 'View' tab -> 'Remember each
folder's view settings' should be checked.

Also be aware that saved views are dependent on the namespace path (position
in the folder tree):

'Desktop\UserName'

will save a view independent of:

'Desktop\Computer\C:\Users\UserName'

Also be aware that the 'Apply to Folders' option only affects folders of the
same type or template, e.g. 'All Items', 'Documents', 'Pics & Video', etc.
So if you want to set list view as the default for all the major folder
types, you need to use 'Apply to Folders' five times, once from each type of
folder.

OK, that is complicated. I understand the intent, but that really is a bit
inconvenient.

So to the original part of my question, Why does the details view that I
set for control panel NOT persist. I have 'Remember each folders view
settings' checked. But the details view does not persist for the control
panel. And there is no organize button on the control panel. I am in
classic view, so is this the reason why? Since i am the sysadmin, i find the
classic view more functional for me. Less clicks to get to the utility that
I want.

This is weird. I deleted my saved views (BagMRU & Bags) as well as folder
defaults (Streams\Settings & Streams\Default) & rebooted.

Opened Control Panel, set to details & closed. Icons again. Tried several
times, no luck. Other folders would save view just fine. Ran RegMon & saw
no attempt by Explorer to read or write view settings for Classic View
Control Panel!!!

To annoy me further, Control Panel Home would save its view -- even though
there's nothing about it you can change!!!

Finally got it to stick by opening Control Panel (Classic), set view to
details, 'Tools' menu (Alt+T) -> Folder Options -> 'View' tab -> 'Apply to
Folders' button.

That got Classic Control Panel saving its views as normal. Hope that works
for you!!!

No idea why this is screwy...I will forward this info to MS.

Thanks, that seemed to do it. Probably just a small bug, but an annoying one
to be sure.
