Folders - set default view and make it persistent?

How can I set a default view for all folders in Vista Windows Explorer? In
earlier Windows versions, this was fairly easy using Folder Options | View.
I have been unable to make my folder settings permanent in Vista Home
Premium.

I apologise if this has been discussed previously, but I have searched
extensively and I have followed several different suggested processes. None
of them has made my folder settings persistent.

Overall I like Vista and find it has many nice improvements. However, so far
I've been unable to select my chosen folder view and make it the default or
persistent for all folders or even for all similar folders.

Thanks for that. I applied the registry fix, but I'm a bit confused what he
suggests to do after that. He wrote:

"Since Auto Discovery is now off you will need to go to your shell folders
(Pictures, Videos, Contacts, Music, etc.) and set them to the template you
want, apply to subfolders, etc."

Is he saying that I need to open each of the main folders under each user,
(e.g. C:\Users\Larry\Documents, C:\Users\Larry\Pictures,
C:\Users\Moe\Documents, C:\Users\Larry\Pictures, etc.),
then do Tools | Folder Options | View | Apply to Folders ?
OR, right-click each of those folders (C:\Users\Larry\Documents,
C:\Users\Larry\Pictures, etc.) | Customize | select All Items | check "Also
apply this template to all subfolders" ?

As you can see, I'm confused about the difference between settings in Tools
| Folder Options and those in Customize.
