When I open Windows Explorer, it always opens to My Documents, fully expanded
.. . .

I want it to open so that the first thing I see are all the drives. Then, I
can open C and go into the directories. Please give me the steps so that
Explorer opens default as described. Thanks.

Basically, all you need do is modify the target field of your
Windows Explorer shortcut to point where you want it. In you case,
"%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e ,c:\" (without the quotes) should do the
trick.

Hi ! I'm not certain if the solution to Mr. Chambers problem is relevant to
mine; but... when I open "Start/Search" or any program such as Excel or Word,
I want to begin looking in "C:/MyStuff/" rather than "Desktop". How can I
implement this ? I followed instructions in the relevant program's Help
section; but they still don't start me at the points or files where I want to
start. Can anyone please help ? I'm fairly certain that I could do this and
start a program with the specific file I wanted opening up along with the
program. Thank You ! Ed VA

It wasn't my problem, I'd offered the solution. No matter.

I don't see any way to readily accomplish this for the Search feature,
other than to set up the desired Search parameters manually, and then
save the Search (File > Save) to the desktop or Start Menu.
Subsequently, use the saved Search (It creates a "My Search.fnd file) to
begin.

For both Excel and Word, there are settings withing each applications
options to specify the default file locations. In Word, Click Tools >
Options > File Locations Tab, high-light the desired selection and click
<Modify>. In Excel, click Tools > Options > General Tab, Default File
Location.

Hi & Thanks for your input. I'll give both Excel & Word a try with your
ideas; but I believe I've already tried them with "Windows XP Home", and they
didn't work. As far as my "Search" problem, I'll keep looking. There's GOT
to be a way ! My ideal situation is to have all my truly "Valuable" stuff
all saved under my specific name so that it won't get lost, and I can back-up
everything I really need from under this one file. Thanks Again; and have a
GREAT WEEKEND !!! Ed VA

Hi Again !

Your idea worked well with "MicroSoft Word"; but opened-up a temporary can
of worms in Excel. It automatically opened-up ALL the files in the directory
I pointed it to; or if I pointed it to a specific file, it just opened-up a
blank-new file. Any ideas here ? Thanks Again ! Ed VA (I Sincerely
Appreciate your help !)

You have to be careful with Excel. Right below the Default file
locations field, is another field that allows one to designate "At
startup open all files in." Make sure this field is empty.

Hi Again !

Well, you've hit the nail on the head for both Word and Excel. Now I have
both programs making any initial searches from my chosen directory; and I
Most Sincerely Appreciate Your Help !!! Thank You ! Now, if I can only get
the Windows Explorer to make its initial searches from my chosen file, it'll
make my life considerably easier.

I've also got some battery and temp issues to resolve like finding out how
to diagnose, or at least display the fan's operation and the thermocouple's
actual temperature. I know I've seen them on a Dell Technician's diagnostic
that he ran when he made a home visit; but come up with Zero results when I
do a search for either "Temperature" or "Diagnostics" on the "Control
Panel/Support" window. If you know anything about these questions; or can
point me in the right direction, I'd sincerely appreciate any response.
Thanks Again ! Ed VA
