Windows Explorer Annoyance

Paul MR

Newbie to XP, having most recently come from Windows 2000 Pro. My
annoyance is that every time Windows Explorer opens, the folder "My
Documents" is expanded and every other folder is collapsed. I want to
change this, but need to know how please.

One way around this:
[Start] -> [Run] enter C: (or whatever drive you wish) [Enter]

After the first time, if you haven't used [Run] with another entry then you
only need
[Start] -> [Run] -> [Enter]

Create a shortcut (right click desktop, click new, shortcut) with the
following line as Location of the item then click next and type any name you
want then click OK.

%windir%\explorer.exe /e

The shortcut can be dragged or copied to the quick launch bar (unlock
toolbar first by right clicking on toolbar and removing checkmark if present
on Lock toolbar) and/or left on the desktop. Double click the shortcut on
the desktop or single click on the quick launch bar and it will open the C:
drive expanded to the root folders.

Basically, all you need do is modify the target field of your
Windows Explorer shortcut to point where you want it.

For instance, "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e ,c:\" (without the
quotes) would open Windows Explorer at the root of the C:\ drive.
Alternatively, you could create a shortcut with a target of
"%windir%\explorer.scf."

Thank you to all who responded. I tried Bruce's suggestion first, and
it worked. Joy. I appreciate that the responses did not sneer at
someone like me who forgets how to change settings I don't touch except
every 3 or 4 years.
