arrange icons by name

i just installed XP pro 64 after using 2000 for years, the biggest
annoyance at this point is every time i open or arrange icons in a
windows explorer window it alternates the orientation of the
alphabetizing... one time it is a-z, next time z-a, i never know if
the a's will be on top or bottom. i'd like it to be alphabetized the
same way every time, perhaps the fix is obvious but i am blind to it...
thank you

Suggestions:
-Take care to close Explorer with the sorting set a-z.
-Open Explorer to C: and set sorting to a-z then close Explorer. If sorting
order is a problem in seemingly random folders, setting sort order at the
root folder sometimes helps to re-establish a consistent sorting pattern.
Close Explorer.

Thank you for your response, i tried as described, but it made no
difference, if you click" arrange icons by names" it alternates
between sorting a-z and z-a, basically it amounts to realizing it is
backwards to my preference and having to re-click, a real nuisance.

One more thing to try: In C:, set your view to "details." Then set the
order to a-z (click the column header - the bar labeled "names).

In older versions of Windows, you would press Ctrl and click the X in upper
right hand corner to make this stick.

In XP, using X or File> Close should work too.

What you're seeing is an old Explorer annoyance. Once the sort order is
restored to a-z, you may see the problem return. Especially if you use
"remember each folder" in Folder Options, change to z-a sorting in a folder
and then forget to revert back to a-z before closing Explorer. And it will
hit all folders if this happened in the root folder (C: , D: or any other
local volume letter).

That's the bad the chance that the problem reoccurs. The good news is
*if using Details view,* it's very simple and quick to click the header for
whatever field you want to sort on: date, name, type and so on.

Ok, thank you. For me it is a new explorer annoyance, never happened
with my win2000 machine.
