Something tricky happening in Windows Explorer (XP Home)

It used to be that when I highlighted the folder name (in the left
column), the right column would give me the contents of the folder.
but nothing would happen to the display in the left column (unless, of
course, I hit the "+" sign).

Recently, either because of changes to the Explorer program or
inadvertent changes to the options, when I highlight the folder name
(left), the folder on the left expands as well as the right showing
the contents. This is annoying and gets in the way of my processing
certain changes efficiently.

Is there some way I can configure Windows Explorer to go back to its
original behavior?

Go back to Windows 98 or ME. XP has always expanded the folders.

I don't know about original behavior...

Click Apply | Click OK

Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list
[[Click a folder in Windows Explorer to automatically display its contents
as well as all subfolders within that folder. All other folders are
automatically closed when a different folder is clicked. Click the plus or
minus sign to hide or display other folders and their contents, without
closing previously opened folders.]]

I do not recall XP always expanding the folders, but I'm willing to
concede that you might be right, especially if I can still get what I
want.

Is there some way to configure Windows Explorer so it doesn't do this?

I can click on the "+" if I want the folders on the left expanded. I'd
rather click on the folder name to have the folders NOT expand, but
show on the right.
