"Folder" Icons Missing in Explorer

I have reinstalled XP and Explorer is misbehaving. The
folder icons in Explorer in the "Folder" view are
missing. Also after downloading the dialog box button
to "Open Folder" give me the Search view of Explorer. I
could not find any thing on Knowledge Base that addressed
this. Can you help?

I should have said Windows Explorer where the drives show
up, not Internet Explorer.

Also perhaps the term "bar" was wrong. I meant the pane
to the left of the folder contents pane that toggles on
and off with the "Folder Icon".

Am I making any sense yet?

Hi John,

This happens when XP is not installed on the C drive.

Note: Adaptation for the Article: Needs to be a path not a drive letter,
so subst c: [x]:\. Note backslash converts a drive letter to a path. It
must point to a valid folder as in: c: d:\Windows
