file/folder icons in explorer

I've asked this before but it has not been answered yet.

When I open certain folders with explorer it can take a while to load all of
the little file icons. Can I turn this off so the icons don't display?

It has been suggested to change the view, but no matter what 'view' I select
I still have the little icons showing next to the file names. This is what
takes a
while to load when you have a folder with several hundred different files.
What I would like to do is turn off the icons on selected or all folders.
