favicons or icons - windows explorer

Victor

When I open explorer to certain directories that have the little icons beside
the file name, it can take quite a while before these little guys all load
and during this process my pc seems very sluggish.

Is there any way I can turn off the showing of these icons?

Thanks.

Sorry, but that does not help. No matter what 'view' I select I still have
the little favicons showing next to the file names. This is what takes a
while to load when you have a folder with several hundred different files.
What I would like to do is turn off the favicons on selected or all folders.

Thanks.

You need to change the icon for one or more file extensions to a generic one.

What extensions are causing you the most delay?

These files are in my downloads folder. They're mostly .exe files, but each
seem to have a different icon.

If you really want to replace exe icons with a generic icon, follow these steps:

Change the DefaultIcon value for exefile from the default "%1" to something
else, such as the icon for DLL files.

1. Launch the registry editor. (Open the Run box and enter: regedit)
2. Open this key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
3. Enter the path to an icon. This is the generic icon for DLL files:
%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,-154

You may need to restart to set the change.

You're welcome.

PS: If you want to show a program's icon for a shortcut just right-click
the shortcut, select Properties, click the "Change Icon..." button.

Take care.
