Folder Display Option: Prevent reversion to default

When I set Folder Display Options to "Details" to apply to all folders, it
sometimes (capriciously) reverts back to "Icons". I have not been able to
set this so that my choice is used. Is there a way to change the Windows XP
Home default to Details?? Is there a macro that can be run at start-up and
as needed to change the display option to Details for all files and folders??
Should I increase the maximum number of "bags" beyond 8000
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Col2Left)?? Or do I have to
live with this??

Thanks for your reply. The article was not hopeful for resolving this via
increasing the maximum number of folders. Is the 8000 limit for the whole
system (I have 3 hard drives on this machine: C, F(internal; used for nightly
automatic synchronization) and U(external USB; used for occassional, manual
backup) at 160, 120 & 500 MB and a zillion files altogether) or does it apply
to just the C drive?? Do you know of a utility that will "count" the files
and folders?? Checking Properties at the root directory level only tells the
total space used and free. I know I have more than 6500 folders on my C
drive (ran "properties" on my main data folder). I am running a whole C
drive search for *.* with an old (free) version of XYPlorer, but I suspect
this will take quite a while to complete.

If this registry limit is only on the C: drive, I can work that by moving
some of the active but infrequently used files off C onto F with U as the
nightly backup. Alternatively, I could partition C if this limitation will
recognize logical splits as fully separate dirves for this 8000 limit.

Do you happen to know if Vista has the same limitation??

No can't recommend anything that might help, sorry.
You need to be careful what you move off the C: drive as some of these files
may be required by Windows.
Have you performed a good disk cleanup lately to get rid of temporary files,
they can build up after a while?

fix this problem. It didn't help.

I am presuming that this is NOT related to having more than 8000 files on
the C drive, but 8000 folders, correct?? If so, temp files should not be
contributing to the problem. I cannot imagine MS having a relatively modern
OS with a maximum limitation of 8000 files or worse yet, 8000 total files +
folders. If I move files from my C drive to my F drive, I will only move
data files, not program or system files; the biggest issue there will be
templates, which I keep in my data folder since it is regularly backed-up and
my Outlook2003 files which are in my main data folder for the same reason.

If you could forward this to a Vista expert to find out if this has been
"fixed" in Vista, I'd appreciate it.

The setting has nothing to do with files. It is how many folder settings it
remembers.

In Vista the BagsMRU setting is set to 5000 as default. Vista too has
problems with not remerging folder settings. Sometimes it changes the
settings unexpectedly.
